Can You Put Solar Panels on Any Roof?
Most UK roofs can take solar panels — tiled, slate, flat and metal roofs are all common. The mounting method varies by roof type, and direction and shading affect output. A survey confirms whether your roof is suitable and how best to fit the panels. This guide explains solar panels on roof types — tiled, slate, flat and metal — plus direction, shading and ground-mounted options for NW homes.
Your roof shapes how panels are fitted and how many will go on. Here’s how the common types compare.
Roof type also feeds into how many panels you can fit — see our guide on how many solar panels you need.
Can You Put Solar Panels on Any Roof?
Most roofs are suitable. The vast majority of UK homes have tiled or slate roofs that take panels easily, and flat and metal roofs are common too.
What matters most is the roof’s condition, the available space, and how much sun it gets. A survey checks all three.

Tiled and Slate Roofs
These are the most common roofs in the North West and are well suited to solar. Panels are fixed to roof hooks or brackets that sit under the tiles or slates, attached to the rafters.
Slate can be a little more delicate to work with, but experienced installers handle both routinely without disturbing the weatherproofing.
Flat Roofs
Flat roofs use mounting frames that tilt the panels towards the sun, so they’re angled rather than lying flat. This often allows flexible positioning for the best output.
Flat-roof planning rules were relaxed at the end of 2023 — see our planning permission guide for the detail.
Metal and Other Roof Types
Metal, corrugated and standing-seam roofs are well suited to solar and often use clamps that avoid drilling into the roof itself.
Some roof coverings — such as thatch — aren’t suitable, and very old or damaged roofs may need attention first. A survey will flag anything that needs doing.
Which Direction Is Best?
South-facing roofs capture the most over the day, but they’re far from the only option.
East and west-facing roofs work well too, spreading generation across morning and afternoon — which can suit households that use power at those times. North-facing slopes are generally avoided.
No Suitable Roof? Ground-Mounted Options
If your roof isn’t suitable — too shaded, too small, or the wrong type — ground-mounted panels can be an alternative where you have the space.
Ground arrays have their own planning considerations, so they’re worth discussing as part of a survey. For larger off-grid setups, see our off-grid solar guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can solar panels go on any type of roof?
Most roofs are suitable, including tiled, slate, flat and metal. The mounting method varies by type. Some coverings such as thatch aren’t suitable, and a survey confirms whether your roof works.
Do solar panels work on a north-facing roof?
North-facing slopes are generally avoided as they receive less direct sun. South, east and west-facing roofs are preferred, with east–west spreading generation across the day.
What if my roof isn’t suitable for solar?
Ground-mounted panels can be an alternative where you have the space. They have their own planning considerations, so it’s best to discuss the options during a survey.
