How Many Solar Panels Do I Need?

The number of solar panels you need depends on your electricity use, roof space and panel wattage. As a rough guide, a typical UK home fits around 8 to 14 panels, making a 3–6kW system. A survey works out the right size for your home.

This guide explains how many solar panels you need in the UK — by energy use, roof space, panel wattage and system size — for North West homes.

There’s no single magic number. The right size balances how much electricity you use, how much roof you have, and your budget.

Sizing and cost go hand in hand, so it’s worth reading this alongside our solar panel cost guide.

How Many Solar Panels Do I Need?

As a rough guide, most UK homes fit somewhere between 8 and 14 panels.

That usually works out as a 3–6kW system, with around 10 panels being a common choice for a typical family home. Your actual number depends on the factors below.

How Panel Numbers Relate to System Size

System size is measured in kilowatts (kW), and each panel adds its wattage to the total. Modern panels are usually around 400–450W each.

System size Panels (approx, at ~400W) Often suits
3 kW ~8 panels 1–2 bedroom homes
4 kW ~10 panels 2–3 bedroom homes
5 kW ~12 panels 3–4 bedroom homes
6 kW ~14 panels Larger or higher-usage homes
Approximate panel counts using ~400W panels. Higher-wattage panels mean fewer needed.

How Your Energy Use Affects the Number

The biggest factor is how much electricity you use. The average UK home uses roughly 2,700–3,500 kWh a year, but heavy users need more.

A good starting point is to check your annual kWh on a recent bill. The more you use — and the more you use during daylight — the larger the system that makes sense.

How Much Roof Space Do You Need?

As a rule of thumb, each panel takes up roughly 2m² of roof. So around 10 panels need about 20m² of usable space.

Orientation and shading matter too. A south-facing roof captures the most, but east–west roofs still work well and spread generation across the day.

Does a 400W Panel Always Make 400W?

No. A panel’s wattage is its peak output under ideal test conditions — bright, direct sun.

In real UK weather, panels produce less than their peak for much of the time. That’s why systems are sized around realistic annual generation, not the headline panel rating.

Sizing for a Battery or EV

If you’re adding battery storage or charging an electric car, it’s often worth a slightly larger array so there’s surplus to store or use.

Our battery sizing guide covers storage, and if an EV is on the cards, see EV charger installation.

Why Choose a Professional Installer?

    • Proper sizing: the system is matched to your usage and roof, not a one-size-fits-all guess.
    • MCS certification: required to access the Smart Export Guarantee for exported electricity.
    • Shading analysis: we account for chimneys, trees and dormers that affect output.
    • Grid compliance: the install is notified and tested to current UK standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many solar panels does a typical UK home need?

Most UK homes fit around 8 to 14 panels, making a 3–6kW system. Around 10 panels (a 4kW system) is a common choice for a 2–3 bedroom home, but it depends on your energy use and roof.

How much roof space do solar panels need?

Each panel takes up roughly 2m², so around 10 panels need about 20m² of usable roof. Orientation and shading also affect how many will fit and perform well.

Does a 400W panel always produce 400W?

No. 400W is the panel’s peak output under ideal test conditions. In real UK weather it produces less for much of the time, which is why systems are sized on realistic annual generation.
