Are There Grants for Solar Panels in the UK?
There’s no single grant that covers solar panels for every UK home. The main nationwide support is 0% VAT on solar and battery storage, available until 31 March 2027. Some lower-income households may qualify for funded schemes such as the Warm Homes Plan. This guide explains solar panel grants and funding in the UK — 0% VAT, ECO4, the Warm Homes Plan and the SEG — for North West homeowners.
The funding picture changes often, so it’s worth checking current eligibility before you rely on any scheme.
Funding also affects your overall outlay — see our solar panel cost guide for what a system typically costs.
Are There Grants for Solar Panels in the UK?
There isn’t a universal grant available to every homeowner in England. Instead, support comes from a mix of schemes:
-
- 0% VAT: available to all homeowners on solar and battery installations.
- Targeted grants: ECO4 and the Warm Homes Plan, aimed at eligible lower-income households.
- The Smart Export Guarantee: ongoing payments for electricity you export (not a grant).

0% VAT on Solar and Batteries
The most widely available support is the 0% VAT rate on residential solar and battery storage. It applies to all homeowners — there’s nothing to apply for, as your installer applies it.
This rate is confirmed until 31 March 2027, after which it’s currently set to return to a reduced rate of 5%. It typically saves homeowners a meaningful sum on a full installation.
Tip: check your quote shows 0% VAT on the solar (and battery, if fitted at the same time). A certified installer applies it as standard.
ECO4 and the Warm Homes Plan
ECO4 has funded energy-efficiency measures, including solar, for eligible low-income households. It has been winding down and is being succeeded by the Warm Homes Plan.
These schemes are generally aimed at households on certain means-tested benefits, often in properties with lower EPC ratings. Eligibility and funding levels vary, so it’s best to check the current position directly.
The Smart Export Guarantee
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) isn’t a grant — it’s ongoing income. Suppliers pay you for the surplus electricity your panels export to the grid.
It’s worth factoring in alongside any upfront support. Our Smart Export Guarantee guide explains how it works and how to register.
What About the Feed-in Tariff?
You may still see the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mentioned. It paid generators for the electricity they produced, but it closed to new applicants in 2019.
For new installations today, the Smart Export Guarantee is the export scheme that replaced it.
Scotland, Wales & Local Schemes
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own energy schemes, which can differ from England — Scotland, for example, has its own home energy grants and loans.
Local councils sometimes offer additional support or group-buying schemes too. It’s worth checking what’s available in your area before going ahead.
